Celebrating the "Run for the Roses"

The phrase "Run for the Roses" has a rich history that adds to the allure of the event. It is derived from the longstanding tradition of draping a lush blanket of roses over the triumphant horse at the end of the race. This tradition, which has been a part of the derby since the 1880s, contributes significantly to the overall atmosphere of the event. It infuses the event with a unique combination of elegance and grandeur, making the experience truly one-of-a-kind. This sweet tradition always adds to the prestige and charm of the event, making the victory even more memorable for the winner and the onlookers.

The Official Bourbon: Woodford Reserve

In Kentucky, you can’t separate the Derby from another longstanding tradition of the area: bourbon! The Kentucky Derby’s official bourbon is the renowned Woodford Reserve. This particular bourbon isn't just a beverage; it's an integral part of the event's history and culture. Woodford Reserve has been meticulously crafted, exhibiting a rich, full-bodied flavor that has stood the test of time. It's this bourbon that forms the foundation of the iconic Mint Julep cocktail, which has become a tradition in and of itself. This particular cocktail has been a staple at the Derby since the early 20th century. The Mint Julep, with its refreshing minty flavor, perfectly complements the excitement and spirit of the races. In essence, both the Woodford Reserve and the Mint Julep cocktail add layers of tradition and enjoyment to the Derby, making it an event to remember.

The Iconic Mint Julep

The Mint Julep is customarily served in a silver or pewter cup and is comprised of a delightful blend of crushed ice, robust bourbon, sweet sugar, and fragrant fresh mint. This concoction is then thoroughly shaken to ensure each sip provides the perfect balance of these ingredients. The tradition of enjoying a Mint Julep while watching the Derby has been upheld for years, and is honored even by those watching the Derby on television throughout the country. During the two-day period of the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby, a staggering number of these cocktails are served. It is estimated that over 120,000 Mint Juleps make their way into the hands of eager spectators, a testament to the drink's enduring popularity and its significance within the culture of this historic racing event.

Thoroughbred Racing at Keeneland

Just a short distance away from the bustling activity of the renowned Derby, situated in the picturesque city of Lexington, you will find the iconic Keeneland Race Course. This significant landmark, recognized and listed on the esteemed National Register of Historic Places, is, like Frankfort, steeped in rich history and tradition. Keeneland Race Course is not just a racecourse, but a testament to the deep-rooted love and passion for thoroughbred horse racing in the region. It proudly offers some of the most exceptional spring and fall thoroughbred horse racing experiences available anywhere in the world. Visitors love to soak up the beauty of the landscaped grounds and enjoy activities at Keeneland like taking a tour, visiting their shop, or perusing their library.

The Derby Hat Tradition

The Kentucky Derby is not just about horse racing; it has also become an occasion for fashion and tradition, which is best exemplified by the longstanding tradition of Derby hats. This tradition dates back to the inception of the race. The founder of the Kentucky Derby, Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., along with his wife, Mary, envisioned an event that would be a social affair just as much as a sporting event. Clark encouraged local high society to attend the races in their finest attire, which led to the tradition of wearing stylish and often extravagant hats.

Today, Derby hats have become a staple of the event. Women and men alike don these creative and elaborate headpieces, showcasing a wide range of styles, colors, and designs. From elegant wide-brimmed hats adorned with feathers and flowers to whimsical creations that reflect the wearer's personality and style, the array of Derby hats adds an extra layer of excitement and spectacle to the event.

The Kentucky Derby, with its rich history and traditions, continues to capture the imagination and hearts of millions around the world. The event transcends the realm of horse racing, becoming a celebration of Southern Kentucky culture, fashion, and community spirit. From the thunderous gallop of the thoroughbreds, the vibrant spectacle of the Derby hats, to the refreshing sip of a Mint Julep, the Derby offers an experience that is truly one-of-a-kind. As we look forward to the 150th running of this remarkable event, we celebrate the enduring legacy and charm of the Kentucky Derby and the excitement to come for our guests at Elkhorn Creek RV Park!
